Hello to
all the learners. Today I am going to share few of my tips on how to write a poem. Also, do have a look at the examples to get a clear understanding of the tips.
So lets begin:
Read! Read! Read!
The first
step is to read. You can read anything novels, short stories, poems of upcoming
young writers, poems from the great poets. Reading will help you gain idea
about the topics, styles, patterns, rhyme schemes used by the poets.
Observe the surroundings
Observe
your surroundings. Try to come up with new and creative. People usually are
bored with the clichés. Also, try to imagine and write fictional poems. Start
from what is the theme on which you want to write exactly? Then, whether you want to include characters
or not. If you are including the characters, imagine what they look like, what
they do, their behavior. All this you can write in the initial few lines of the
poem.
For
example, in this poem The unsaid, I have given a gist of the characters in the
initial verses.
Brainstorm
Come up
with ideas and do a little brainstorming. This will definitely help you.
Non rhyming poems
“A poetry should
have a rhyme scheme.” is a misconception. If you are finding it difficult to
write rhymed verses, start with the non-rhymed verses.
For example, in this poem, I found the key, there is no rhyme scheme.
Start with basic aa bb rhyme scheme
Start with writing
basic couplets and then move to more complex verses. Go step by step. Try
various writing exercises. Using figures of speech adds more value and enhances
the poems.
Example of aa bb rhyme scheme A genuine repentance.
to incorporate a short story in the poem.
For example, Have a look at The thief of generosity poem.
Try various poetry prompts.
Poetry
prompts definitely brings out the creative side in you. You can find a lot of poetry prompts only. Poetry prompt can be a title of the poem or the first line of the poem or any other thing.
For example, In The diary of the love , the first line "They found his diary under his bed" is a first line poetry prompt.
Use images
Use images along with poems. When you add images, it increases the chances that people will read your poems. There are also a lot of free pictures online that you can use. One such website which provides free images is Pixabay.
Also, start
describing images in the form of a poetry.
For example, Have a look at The shattered nest.
You can also write about any real life experience that really touched your heart.
For example, Have a look at An art of living.
Do collaborations
Collaborate
with others poets, artists, writers. Collaborations will definitely bring the
best out of you.
For example, She is fire. Here, I have collaborated with the artist and wrote a poetry description of his drawing.
I also have done vice a versa. That is I first wrote the poem and then requested the artist to draw about my poem.
For example, take a look at Oh Mommy!
Revise and editing
After writing
the poem, revise it and edit if there are some grammatical or any other
mistake. Tell others to read and find
their opinions. Share your poems on your blog or various poetry sharing
platforms. Accept the appreciation as well as the feedback that you will get.
Try different types of poems
Once you
get acquainted with poems and once you start enjoying the process of writing
poems, try writing different types of poems. Poems such as Limericks, haiku etc
are more restrictive then the free verse poems in terms of syllables and rhyme scheme.
Trying out these different poems will enhance the poet in you.
